CUBICLE TO COCKTAIL: VALENTINE’S DATE

February 12, 2018

Happy Monday, ladies! It’s Valentine’s week! I love love, so this is always one of my favorite weeks of the year. But given that Valentine’s happens on a Wednesday this week, it can be a bit of challenge to plan for. In today’s post I want to show you how you can take your work look from Cubicle to Cocktail, and ready for your Valentine’s date,  in just a few simple swaps.

PICK YOUR COLOR PALETTE

The first thing you’re going to want to do to get ready for you Valentine’s Date/Work is to narrow down your closet. With too many options you could find yourself trying on a million outfits and getting frustrated. So pick a few colors that you’d like to wear, and just look at the pieces in your closet that fit that color palette. I chose to go with white, pink, and red. I don’t have a lot of these colors in my wardrobe. But I know I have pieces in all the colors that work for work and play. So besides being seasonally appropriate, I also narrowed my options significantly by choosing a main color other than black or brown, which are highly represented in my wardrobe.

FIND YOUR WORKWEAR PIECES

Whatever you pick, you need to make sure it’s work appropriate. Your work outfit is not quite as important as your date outfit, so don’t be afraid to KISS: Keep it simple, stupid. A pair of black trousers and a conservative blouse are a perfect workday outfit, and it’s really easy to swap your pants for a skirt, or even a different pair of pants. You could also swap skirts, which gives you more layering versatility, like the ability to wear a dress as a top.

Look at the selection you laid out and determine how each piece can be made appropriate for your work. Is your dress long enough, but does it need a blouse on top to hide some cleavage? Evaluate, and ditch any pieces you just can’t make appropriate.

DRESS IT UP FOR DATE NIGHT

Now is the fun part. How do you kick your look up a notch for a Valentine’s date? Or do you want to keep it more muted and demure? I swapped my regular pants for a lace skirt, which has a ton of sexy factor all on its own. So all I needed to do was add a little extra sparkle, and swap my big work bag for something a little more fun.

If you wore a skirt over a dress, do you want to swap your shoes? Add a more vibrant lipstick? Maybe you paired a midi dress with a plunging neckline with a sweater for work. Does your look need a long T-necklace, or maybe a perfectly matched coat to stay warm? Try on your date night look, and perfect all the details.

If you decide to switch to a smaller bag, try stashing it in your workbag to keep the load light. Accessories, lipstick, and everything else, try to fit in a little cosmetic bag stashed inside as well. That way you can make your change super quick, and be out the door and on to date night in just a few minutes.

What are your plans for Valentine’s Day this year?
