FALL 101: INTRO TO STYLING

Welcome to Class! Today we’re talking fall style, down to the absolute basics. Fall 101, if you will. In today’s post, I’m sharing the pieces that I think are the absolute essentials for your wardrobe, plus a few formulas that you can rely on using those pieces. Finally, there’s a few tips and tricks for making your look a little trendier this year, without having to invest in a whole new wardrobe.

FALL CAPSULE WARDROBE

Button ups are always a go-to, but they are trending for fall, so make sure you’ve got one with a bit of an oversized fit to add to your fall capsule wardrobe as a layering piece. Although not as trendy as in previous years, I still recommend a good blazer that can add a bit of warmth, without feeling like a coat. But you’ll also want a neutral coat on the warmer end, too. A layering-friendly sweater is another must. I like something with stripes, but you can also opt for a solid or both. A few camis or tanks that you can layer or wear alone, along with the same vibe in t-shirts and long sleeves are also essential.

Denim will be a must, a straight or baggier cut will be the way to go. Black denim or a black pant that can be dressed up or down is also essential! If you’re a dress or skirt person, have something in each length (mini, midi, maxi). If you’re really aiming for minimalism here, pick dresses because you can always turn those into skirts by layering!

When it comes to footwear, I did a post all about boots on Monday, so I definitely recommend starting there. A chic pair of sneakers is another must have. I tend to wear sandals year round, so I like to keep a few pairs in fall tones easily accessible. A slightly chunkier heel is also a must – it’s easy to wear and the weight keeps the style from looking too summery.

GO-TO FALL FORMULAS

This outfit is a formula favorite. If the weather calls for it, I’ll swap out the sandals for sneakers or boots, but I’m all for easy footwear whenever possible.

Here’s a few other formulas to jot down in your notes app:

  • sweater + denim + sneaker
  • midi dress + layered sweater + boots
  • oversized button up + cami + denim + boots
  • cami + blazer + black pant + heels
  • t-shirt + dress + boots

SWITCH IT UP THIS YEAR

If you want to make your look a little more trendy, you’ll have to deviate from some of the Fall 101 Basics. One great choice is adding leather elements to your outfits, since leather is super on trend this year. A moto jacket is a great choice, since it’s a classic even when it’s not super trendy.

Clogs are also in style this year and might be fun try. This is a trend that won’t stick around forever, though, so don’t invest too much. Bright colors are another big trend this season that will sort of move in and out in popularity. If you have a neutral base, you can include a few affordable bright pieces to bring your outfit to the trendier end.

Western boots are trending this year. If you’re like me, you probably already own a bunch. But if not, they can be super fun, but very expensive. Opt for an inexpensive pair if you don’t see yourself wearing them after the trendiness passes by.
