TWO WAYS TO WEAR YOUR WINTER COAT INTO SPRING

Happy Fri-YAY, ladies! Chris’s shift schedule changed pretty dramatically about a week ago and I’m still recovering. I’m not quite sure what day it is ever or even the time. I’m still trying to adapt my work schedule around his new sleep schedule. #CouplesProblems. Anywhooo, back to today’s post. So I’m looking at the remains of snow from my window, but I know it’s bound to come again. The thing about this time of year is that we’re all ready for spring. But Mother Nature usually has other plans. So in today’s post I’m giving a few of my tips and tricks for wearing your winter coat with a little extra springiness so you can have your cake and eat it, too.

PICKING THE RIGHT WINTER COAT

The best way to spring-ify your winter coat is just to grab the one in the right color. White, pastels, and camel are your go-to’s. While I’m certainly not opposed to wearing black in spring (see this post), you can add a lot more spring to your look by opting for a softer color. In fact, this white coat added a little more spring to my lacy black dress. Because it’s more cocktail/formal attire, though, I appreciated the darker touch. Still, had I opted for a black coat, this look would have been a lot heavier, warmer, and more wintery.

WEARING A WINTER COAT IN THE NIGHT

For cocktail wear, I like going for darker colors. There’s something so classy about a black dress, but I didn’t want to look to be overly heavy and wintery, like I said above. Anyway, this white coat grounds the look. Plus matching my heels to my coat (rather than my dress) helps lighten the look. The pastel shoe and pinky lip carry the dress into spring just a little bit more, while keeping the classic formality of a black dress.

WEARING A WINTER COAT FOR DAYTIME

During the day, you’ll still opt for a more pastel or light colored jacket. But I’m more willing to play with color in the day time. Instead of opting for deep burgundies, emeralds, and other rich colors, pull the colors straight from your Easter basket or spring bouquet. Spring is the time to experiment with bright color mixes. If you don’t know how to make it look intentional, try picking a piece that has small pops of color and then bringing those colors out in other accessories. A white or camel colored coat looks best over these pops and, surprisingly, tones down the colors more than a dark coat would. It’ll add an airiness to your look, but still keep you grounded and warm.

What’s the weather like where you are? Are you still reaching for heavy coats?
