I’m a huge fan of the pom pom trend, but after shopping around, I just couldn’t find any I liked in my price range. The pair I liked the most, from Aquazzura were $825! A little too expensive for me for any shoes, let alone a trend which may only last a few summers. So I knew I wanted to DIY them, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to commit a pair of shoes to #poms4lyfe, SO, I did a little brainstorming and came up with a way to make a little shoe wrap adorned with poms to dress up a pair I already had! If you’ve been wanting to try the pom trend out, but aren’t sure you want to commit, give this DIY a try!

I loved the result so much, I’m already planning on making fall-colored pom wraps and even trying some bedazzled versions! On Wednesday, I’m sharing how I styled this adorable DIY so make sure to check back in a couple days!

Follow the steps below to make your own pom shoes!

SUPPLIES.

  • Shoes with a strap across the toe
  • A piece of felt that matches the color of your shoes (decorated is fun!)
  • A thin piece of fabric which matches the color of your shoes
  • Sew-on velcro
  • Thread that matches the color of your shoes and fabric
  • Poms of various sizes and colors (or however you want them!)
  • Needle
  • Scissors

ONE. Measure your shoe-colored felt against your shoe to get an idea of how wide you want your band of poms to be. Make sure it covers from edge to edge. Then trim the felt to the desired size. You should have one piece for each shoe.

TWO. Lay out your poms in the pattern you want and make a mirror image of that pattern for the other shoe.

THREE. Thread your needle and knot it at the end. You’ll want to make the first stitch halfway through the felt, then push the pom onto the needle. Wiggle it around and make sure you’ve caught the body of the pom, not just a knot in the fluff.

FOUR. Finish pulling the needle and thread through, then pass it back down through the pom.

FIVE. Repeat steps 3 & 4 until all of the poms are attached across the band of felt, making sure the piece is always able to lay flat.

TIP. It won’t lay flat if you pull the thread too tightly. If the felt starts to be pulled into a bend by the thread, hold firmly on the working side, let go of the needle, and gently pull the beginning side of the work. Do this every 2-3 poms to make sure it’s flat.

SIX. After you’ve attached all the pins, secure the thread on the backside of the band.

SEVEN. Place your finished pom band across the thin fabric you’ll use to wrap the shoe. Cut the thin fabric to be just slightly narrower than the felt.

TIP. You can see I trimmed the felt around to match the shape of the poms, this was unnecessary and actually a mistake because my thin fabric was lighter than my shoe color. Just leave the band the thickness of the shoe strap and you’ll be golden. It actually looks really cool if you have a textured felt like I used!

EIGHT. Wrap your thin piece of fabric around the shoe and trim off the extra length. You want the top flat to come almost to the edge, but not quite to the edge because you’ll see it!

NINE. With the thin fabric wrapped around the shoe, place the pom’d piece on top. Hold it securely while you take it off the shoe, then start to stitch the pom’d felt band to the fabric. The best way to do this is to add one stitch to tack it into place, then take a second to make sure it’s straight before continuing.

TEN. Sew around the edge of the band, under the poms for the most secure and invisible fit.

ELEVEN. Try the wrap around the shoe and figure out where you want the velcro to fit, this will vary based on your comfort. I wanted mine to be closer to the toe.

TIP. In order to make sure the wrap is as secure as possible, the bottom flap should fold toward your ankle and the top flap should fold away. This way, when you put your shoe on, if the fit is a little snug, you won’t be pulling the velcro apart.

TRICK. Another way to imagine this is to lay your wrap next to your shoe in the direction you want the poms to face. Now, sew the velcro for the top on THE BACK of the thin fabric, and sew the velcro at the bottom of the wrap on THE FRONT of the fabric (aka, the same side you sewed the poms on to).

TWELVE. Sew the velcro on the same was as the band.

THIRTEEN. Rewrap the piece on the shoe and mark off where the matching velcro edge goes with a pencil or marker.

FOURTEEN. Sew the second piece of velcro like the first.
