Nothing like seeing family to help you re-energize right? In today’s post I’m talking about how to make the most out of your wardrobe and wear your off the shoulder tops to work. I briefly mentioned this trick in this post, but I wanted to explore it more in depth. So keep reading for the how to + a few tops you can shop that will follow these rules!

PULL IT UP!

Yeup. That’s it. Just pull the sleeves up. It seems so straight forward but I know so many people who get stuck in the rut of their clothing’s purpose, and forget to experiment with wearing it in different ways. And if you’re not standing in front of a mirror, you may not notice how pretty the top looks on your shoulder when you pull it on. So always remember to experiment with your wardrobe, and pull up that neckline to wear your off the shoulder tops to work.

OKAY, BUT IT’S A LITTLE MORE COMPLICATED

This trick works with most off the shoulder tops, but not all. While shopping your closet, you can skip any tops that have the off the shoulder part of the sleeve attached separately from the body (like this one). These sleeves just don’t pull up and stay looking nice, plus the neckline is so low it’s unflattering at best and unprofessional at worst. The exception would be the attached sleeves that are very loose and quite ruffly as they can sometimes disguise these problems, but don’t bank on it. You’ll also probably want to avoid tops that have thick elastic at the top (like this) as it just doesn’t lay smoothly.

The tops you should definitely test out are those that have looser arm holes because when you pull the shoulder up, it’s going to pull that hole up to. And if it’s too small or meant to be worn too low on your arm, it’s going to cut into and hurt your underarm throughout the day. I have found that the tops like I wore in this post, with a thin elastic on a ruffle which attaches to what is essentially a tube top to be the best. There’s usually a lot more stretch, and the ruffle just hangs so elegantly. Tops without ruffles, but have thin or unobtrusive elastic, and wider or shorter sleeves also tend to work most of the time.
