HAPPY 4TH BLOGIVERSARY!

Happy Wednesday, ladies! How appropriate that the 4th Blogiversary of Fashion in Flight comes on my favorite weekday! To be honest, I don’t really have much of a plan for this post. I’ve been wracking my brain trying to come up with a way to celebrate this year that felt appropriate. Nothing too much, but I also don’t have anything special coming up (like last year’s new site design). So I find myself sitting here just writing anything that comes to mind, quite reminiscent of early posts, actually.

THE PAST

I started this blog in 2013 because I had always wanted to write a blog and I just loved sharing my passion for style. In the course of its growth, I’ve learned a lot about my style and expanded into more beauty and lifestyle posts. This blog has grown with me, and I absolutely adore that.

Pretty much all my old posts were fashion related, and I posted on every odd day. That was a ton of posting. But a lot of posts were composed of collages, they were text heavy, but relatively easy to produce in the evenings. I could write two or three in a night. So I did.

As I started taking more and more of my own photos, the posts had to come up less often. It takes a day to plan looks, another day to shoot them, and then another to edit and upload. Additionally, life just got in the way. I suffered heartbreaks, academic setbacks, depression, all that yummy stuff that everyone goes through and no one talks about.

But even as posts were sparse, they still served as a chronology and history of life as it was. It’s interesting to look back on through the lens of fashion and style – and even beauty, now that I know what that means. Seriously, when I started my blog I wouldn’t have even known how to apply liquid foundation. “Fingers?” would be my guess. A sponge or brush wouldn’t have crossed my mind. I digress.

Anyway, that’s something I challenge you. Even if you have no interest in starting a blog, a photo (be it of your outfit, or something in your life) with a caption can be a great way to chronicle the moments and live in the present. If you print them out or upload them to dropbox with a caption, give it a shot. Try to take one or two photos at least a week, and jot down a sentence – whatever comes to mind, even if it has nothing to do with the photo. End the year that way, then look back and see what you think.

THE PRESENT

There’s a lot of things I love about the blog as it is today. For one, when I started I only dreamed of it having so many photos taken of my own looks. But I miss some other kinds of posts, like the ones composed of collages of pieces inspired by the world around me. It’s really about time I get around to updating those old posts so you can see what I mean.

I liked those. I still do. Even un-updated they still get traction through SEO and other channels. They’re fun, interesting, and different. And they’re nostalgic. Which is kind of on trend, right? People can never stop talking about the way things used to be. The 90’s are back in, full-force and becoming the present. People are channeling their old selves and meshing that with who they are today – and it’s awesome. It seems like the world is going to hell in a hand-basket, but if you look carefully and pay attention, there’s a lot of resistance to that. It won’t happen.

But me presently, I am struggling to stay inspired and motivated. The gears are trying to turn, but not quite meshing and clicking in place to run smoothly. Maybe it’s just that I have a thing against even numbers, my 2nd blogiversary wasn’t too exciting either – except for me, at the time. But now we’re moving into my fifth year blogging so that should bring good things right? I think it’s time to make it so – a self-fulfilling prophesy. It’s time to get the gears working again.

THE FUTURE

Every time I plan looks, we go shoot them, or I sit here writing and brainstorming posts, I feel like I’m doing something important. Important to me, at least. And every time I wish I could devote huge portions of my day to it. Now, I’m not planning on becoming a full-time blogger any time soon. Or ever, really.  I don’t think I could be fulfilled by any one thing.

But blogging is, to me, fulfilling in many ways. It checks off a lot of boxes so I won’t be giving it up anytime soon. In fact, I’m ready for another major growth. Another pivotal moment. I have plans, both related to and unrelated to the blog and I can’t wait to see them through. The challenge at present, like I said above, is staying motivated. So share your suggestions on those below! I’d love to do a big round up of a post sharing my favorite techniques and yours so we can all benefit.

I also want to bring back a lot of the old style of posts I used to do. Collages as opposed to all my own outfits. If I do that, I would also keep posts up to a minimum of three per week since those guys are easily produced, and inspiration and motivation are the only stopping factors. How does that sound?

I don’t really know what the future holds, just what I want it to hold. But with every day I understand more and more the importance of the present. Finding a way to be in the moment and enjoy the present, but also use every day as a launch pad to the future is my new mission. And I hope you’ll continue to join me on the journey.

Happy 4th Blogiversary, Fashion in Flight! And a special thanks for to y’all for reading. I love you all.
