3 AWESOME TRAVEL WORKOUTS

Happy #WorkoutWednesday, ladies! This is my last week in Peru, can you believe it? I can’t. Although, I’m really excited to get home and see my family. I’m also really sad to be leaving. It’s a beautiful country and I love being able to focus on work sans the daily distractions. I feel like I’ve grown and conquered a lot of my to-do’s since being here, but I’m worried about keeping that momentum up. We will see, and of course, you will hear all about it because that’s what #Girlbosses do: share their successes and struggles so others can benefit from them. Anyway, it’s Workout Wednesday so here’s some tips for getting in a little fitness on the go!

TRAVEL WORKOUT #1: EASY YOGA

You ladies know by now that I’m not a huge fan of formal workouts. I like what I like, and getting myself to do anything else is like pulling teeth. But I do love yoga and stretching. So when I’m traveling, I prefer to do some kind of yoga and stretching over any other routine. It’s low impact, you can do it in your pajamas, and a really good stretch can be accomplished in 10-15 minutes or less.

Yoga is also a great idea if your traveling for tourism and walking around a bunch. You may already be getting in your steps, even cardio if you’ve got stairs to climb, so a good stretching routine is a great way to balance the activity you’re doing during the day and maintain your strength and muscle movement for more fun stuff! The routine I like the most for this purpose is a simple Yoga for Beginners routine I found on Pinterest. You can find the link to it here. And go ahead and save it to your phone so you can do it anywhere!

WORKOUT #2: QUIET CARDIO

Pumps and Iron makes another appearance on the blog. Can you tell I love Nicole’s routines? She’s got routines all organized by equipment, structure, target area, and more. Obviously, you know I’m all over the body-weight work outs.

But there’s one that I appreciate the most for travel. It’s variably called a beginner’s workout or a travel workout. Although, I tend to find workouts geared toward beginners are the most travel friendly because they’re generally low impact and fairly quiet. And that is exactly what I like about this workout. It’s quiet, low impact (gotta save some strength for tourist-ing!), and it doesn’t take a lot of space. So you can do it in a hotel room or your parent’s guest bedroom without any issues.

Find the workout on on Nicole’s blog and check out the embedded YouTube video as well!

WORKOUT #3: HACK IT

Finally this last workout is probably my favorite for unstructured travel. Maybe you have a busy trip and getting an actual workout in isn’t possible. That’s totally okay. There’s a few things you can do throughout the day to help get in a little strength training and cardio. I also recommend picking up a FitBit or other fitness tracker that allows you to set goals. I have stairs, steps, and active hours goals that can help keep me going and moving in the right direction!

  • Take the stairs. This is obvious, but most people don’t think about it because they think of stairs as all or nothing. Which is fine if you’re on the 2nd floor. But if you’re staying on the 16th floor of a hotel, that might be too many stairs or just too time-consuming. But what if you only took the stairs up to the 3rd floor, and took the elevator from there? Or take it up to the 14th floor, and (assuming you’re wearing sneakers), run up the stairs like you would bleachers.
  • Heel raises. Do them in the shower, do them in the elevator (when you’re not taking the stairs!). Pretty much any time you’re standing still, you can do heel raises. Just stand up on your tip toes and slowly let your heels down. It’s almost too simple to explain and they’re great for building a little calf strength, which will make your heels look even more gorgeous on! Just make sure to stretch before bed if you do a lot!
  • Squat-portunities. Squats are kind of the work out rage, and they’re pretty easy to do to. And so are their sister workout, wall sits. There’s lots of opportunities to do both throughout your day. Try doing wall sits while your putting on your make up, or even hovering in a squat above your chair as you apply foundation. Just make sure you’re stable (like in a wall sit) if you’re dealing with heat like a curling iron or doing detail work like mascara.
