GAME DAY

So maybe you know this, or maybe you don’t, but I am a huge baseball fan. The Oakland A’s have my heart. My family isn’t too into baseball so it’s anyone’s guess where I got it, but I absolutely love it. So when I was presented with the opportunity to work with Fanatics in a challenge to style a ball cap from their MLB collection, I couldn’t wait to try it! Fanatics has such a huge collection of licensed sports gear, my mind was just swirling with ideas for the perfect game-day look.

For a long time, a ball cap was a last resort on a bad hair day, but they’ve become more popular over the years. Every blogger has a stylish ball cap in her closet, but I’ve yet to see a cap worn a little dressed up on the real streets. Ball caps and jerseys tend to be worn in ways that don’t emphasize the feminine. That’s totally okay, but it just isn’t me. I love embracing my feminine and girly side, whether I’m in class, flying airplanes, or talking sports with the boys. On game-day, I try to incorporate the colors and motifs in a way that supports my team, without losing my personality in a sea of green and gold.

Dressing up a baseball hat is way easier than it seems, although trying to pick one from the extensive collection Fanatics carries might not be. Really, it’s about as complicated as dressing up your favorite plain t-shirt (you can add a cap to that one, too 😉 ). The key is to not try too hard, a simple sweater, a comfy pair of boyfriend jeans and a neutral wedge instantly amp it up. Because I can’t avoid feminine sparkle, a fun matching necklace and a small pair of studs complete the look for me.

I would wear my hair in loose curls or a soft side braid with a look like this. Maybe I’m a little old fashioned, but I always take my hat off when I walk into a building. To avoid the dreaded hat hair, I over-tease and pack a comb. You can also tighten your hat at the back, if it’s adjustable, and not press it down fully against your scalp. Sometimes I’ll pull a little hair up toward my forehead (like I’m lifting before hair spraying freshly teased hair) before I put the hat on. It also adds a little mess, which helps keep the look casual and effortlessly cool looking.

This post has me itching for more games and it breaks my heart that every day brings us closer to the end of the season. But for now, I’ll keep rooting for my team, win or lose, because every ball, every play, every move could maybe, just maybe, be the spark that carries us to the last game of the season.

“Baseball fosters illusions. Baseball fosters hopes. Baseball inflates us. Baseball lies to us seductively and we know we’re being seduced and we don’t complain.” – John Thorn
